Original article published at Dentistry 33 The ISPOR’s 2023 annual global conference — with a theme of Impacting Innovation, Value and Healthcare Decision Making — convenes thought leaders to discuss how we establish, incentivize and share value sustainable for health systems, patients and technology developers. Billed as the leading global conference for health economics and outcomes research, the conference takes place May 7 to 10, virtually and in-person in Boston. Organizers said attendees will be primed for discussion and speakers will disseminate the latest trends in health care. Topics to be covered at ISPOR include: Clinical outcomes Epidemiology and public health Economic evaluation Health policy and regulatory issues Health technology assessment Health service delivery and process of care Medical technologies Patient-centered research Real-world data and information systems Study approaches Methodological and statistical research Organizational practices During the event, RxData and Edra Publishing will unveil a new book, “Patient-Reported Outcome Measures,” written by Dr. Giuseppe Banfi, MD, and researcher Federico Pennestrì. In the new book, the authors conclude that increasing investments in health care do not necessarily produce corresponding improvements in the perceived health of their recipients, whether individual patients or society. Banfi and Pennestrì explore how to quantify health regained by patients, how to measure what matters to patients when physical health is not fully recoverable and how to help physicians and administrators identify the correct objectives and improvements. They also describe what scientific instruments can estimate the best routes for patients and people given the allocation of limited resources. The authors discuss the development of Patient Reported Outcome Measurements (PROMs) which help answer many of these challenges, offering a standardized tool to quantify and qualify the effectiveness of health interventions from the point of view of patients. This book provides an introductory framework to the science of patient-reported experience and outcomes, illustrating the need for them, their main applications and some significant national and international studies. The duo also analyzes limitations and opportunities for development in the new book. The aim is to raise the awareness of practitioners, patients and students of their use in day-to-day practice, with an additional goal of contributing today to the development of the medicine of tomorrow. Banfi is a professor of clinical biochemistry and clinical molecular biology at Università Vita e Salute San Raffaele of Milan and scientific director of the Scientific Institute for Research, Hospitalization and Healthcare (IRCCS) in Milan, Italy. Pennestrì is a postdoctoral researcher at the IRCCS, a title granted by the Italian Department of Health to a limited number of institutes in the country. The organization is committed to developing benchmarks for the public health system for the quality of patient care and innovation in the field of organization.
